Beaches near Casa Las Dunas: places we go back to again and again

One of the things we value most about Casa Las Dunas is its location. Being at the Mirador de las Dunas, in the north of Fuerteventura, means having very different beaches close by, without feeling surrounded by crowds or traffic.

Some are just a few minutes away. Others require a short drive but are absolutely worth it. Below, we share the beaches closest to the house, how we usually get there, and a few favourites we always recommend to guests.

The dunes beaches of Corralejo

Maps: https://maps.google.com/?q=Grandes+Playas+Corralejo
Distance from our House: 5–10 minutes by car
Ideal for: swimming on calm days, long walks, relaxing, sunrise
Why we love it: endless space, white sand, and a constantly changing landscape

These are the closest beaches to the house and part of the Corralejo Natural Park. Even on busier days, the size of the area makes it easy to find quiet spots.

These are the closest beaches to Casa Las Dunas and the ones we visit most often.

In less than ten minutes by car, you are inside the Natural Park, surrounded by white sand dunes and long, open beaches. They are spacious, wild and constantly changing depending on the light and the wind.

We usually come here for long walks, to swim on calm days, or simply to sit and enjoy how big everything feels. Even when there are more people around, it is easy to find quiet areas because the beaches are so wide.

They are ideal if you want nature without having to plan too much.

Playa del Moro and nearby dune beaches

Maps: https://maps.google.com/?q=Playa+del+Moro+Corralejo
Distance from Mirador de las Dunas: 7–10 minutes by car – next to las Dunas
Ideal for: surfing- especially in summer, watching the ocean, wild landscapes, turquoise water
Why we love it: raw, open and powerful, especially on windy days

Still within the dunes area, some beaches are less exposed to the wind. These are popular with surfers with low to medium levels, especially during summer.

El Cotillo: lagoons, sunsets and open coast

Maps: https://maps.google.com/?q=El+Cotillo+Fuerteventura
Distance from Mirador de las Dunas: 20 minutes by car
Ideal for: swimming in lagoons, sunset, walking, surfing, eating by the sea
Why we love it: calm, natural pools on one side, chill swimming with lagoons.

El Cotillo is about twenty minutes away by car and is one of those places that never disappoints. It is one of the most comfortable beaches.

  • If it is a windy day, you will probably find some space to protect yourself on this beach.
  • If you want, you can eat around in a charming town.
  • If you get bored of the beach, you can walk around, and you will love it.
  • And if you feel brave enough… We recommend you go on Sunday evening, and join a very jam session of acro yogis!

Near the old harbour, you will find natural lagoons with calm water, protected from the waves. These are perfect for swimming, floating, reading or watching the sunset. The light here in the afternoon is something special.

On the other side of the village, the coastline opens up into long beaches with stronger waves, more wind and a very raw feel. It is a great area for surfing or simply walking along the shore without seeing buildings around you.

We always suggest spending at least half a day here, and if possible, staying until sunset.

Esquinzo (north, near El Cotillo)

This is one of our personal favourites.

Not to be confused with Esquinzo in the south, this beach is in the north, close to El Cotillo. It is wide, quiet and often surprisingly empty.

Maps: https://maps.google.com/?q=Playa+de+Esquinzo+El+Cotillo
Distance from Mirador de las Dunas: 25 minutes by car
Ideal for: long walks, disconnecting, quiet beach days, nature, surfing
Why we love it: wide, peaceful and rarely crowded

This is the Esquinzo in the north, not the one in the south. It feels untouched and open, perfect when you want silence and space. Swimming depends on sea conditions, but the experience goes far beyond that.

We go there when we want space and silence. It is perfect for long walks, disconnecting, and enjoying a very untouched side of the island. Swimming depends on sea conditions, but even when the water is rough, just being there feels grounding.

This beach does not have easy access. To reach it, you need to go down a path that is not suitable for people with reduced mobility or strollers.

If you enjoy wild landscapes and beaches that don’t feel curated, this one should not be missed.

Sotavento and the lagoon (worth the drive)

Maps:https://maps.google.com/?q=Sotavento+Beach+Fuerteventura
Distance from Mirador de las Dunas: around 1 hour by car
Ideal for: lagoon walks, kitesurf, photography, unique landscapes, drinking in the chiringuito
Why we love it: the lagoon that forms at medium tide is unforgettable

Sotavento is further away, about an hour by car, but it is one of those places you remember long after leaving the island.

When the tide is at a medium level, a shallow lagoon forms between the shore and the sandbanks. The water is clear, calm and reflective, creating a unique landscape that feels almost unreal.

We always recommend checking the tide before going, because the lagoon experience depends entirely on it. When conditions are right, it is one of the most special beaches in Fuerteventura.

How we usually move around

For nearby beaches around Corralejo and the dunes, a car is the most practical option, although cycling is possible if you enjoy wind and open roads.

For El Cotillo, Esquinzo and Sotavento, having a car makes everything easier and more flexible. Taxis work well for short distances but are less practical for exploring multiple beaches in one day.

Beaches we always recommend to guests

If we had to choose a short list, it would be these:

The dunes beaches near Corralejo for their scale and light
El Cotillo lagoons for calm swims and sunsets
Esquinzo (north) for its wild, quiet character
Sotavento during medium tide for the lagoon experience

Each of them shows a different side of Fuerteventura, and all are reachable while staying at Casa Las Dunas.

A final thought

Staying at Casa Las Dunas means being close to some of the island’s most beautiful beaches without living in the middle of the busiest areas. You can explore freely during the day and come back to a calm, elevated place in the evening.

If you enjoy variety, nature and space, this location gives you all of that, without having to choose just one type of beach.
